Innovative Hospital Design:
A Kaiser Permanente Award Winner

A Case Study from ADITAZZ

In March of 2012, a hospital design created by ADITAZZ was chosen as one of two winning solutions for Kaiser Permanente's first-ever ‘Small Hospital, Big Idea' international design competition.  The winning project successfully responded to the client request for a small hospital that provides a patient-centered healing environment with a near-zero energy impact on the environment while using the latest technology to improve quality and reduce costs.

This project represents a refreshingly innovative way to deliver exceptional, effective and accessible care in a small hospital.  The 118-bed facility design is based on a core principle of crossing the boundary between local community and the traditional hospital setting to create a Community Center of Health that conveys a salutogenic sense of everyday life in a healing environment.

The design features over 40 innovative concepts in operations, medical planning, IT, sustainability, EBD, design methodology, pre-fabrication and other areas of inquiry. These features include the introduction of Integrated Diagnostics, an all-electric power solution for a net zero energy hospital campus, a unique patient early mobility platform, and an over-arching multi-performative PV roof.  The project demonstrates a holistic approach to building systems and sustainability and is targeting LEED HC Platinum. This project elevates the delivery and experience of care through meaningful integration of the hospital with the community realm.
