A Review of LifeCycle Tower One by CREE

This presentation will describe the Life Cycle Tower ONE (LCT ONE), an eight story “wood” office building that was recently built in Austria.  LCT ONE was the culmination of a research and development project called the Life Cycle Tower which developed a system for building high-rises in “timber”, up to 30 stories high.  It is a solution that addresses climate change in the design and construction industry, beginning with the choice for natural resources, specifically using wood to replace steel, concrete and other fossil fuel intensive materials.

The research was commissioned by Cree, an innovative Austrian construction company.  Along with Arup consulting engineers, and Hermann Kaufmann, a world renowned timber architect, the R&D project demonstrated that wood buildings can safely exceed building code height requirements with innovative structural and fire design solutions.  Through a “system built” approach and an integrated process, prefabricated façade and hybrid wood/concrete floor panels can be manufactured and assembled quickly to reach high performance standards, including a reduction of up to 90% of carbon emissions, when compared to comparable, reinforced concrete buildings.

As a proof of concept, LCT ONE was built in March 2012 in Austria.  The presentation will describe the motivation, research and product development that preceded the construction of LCT ONE.  It will then describe how the floor and wall components were produced and how the building envelope was erected in eight days, one story per day.

Nabih Tahan, AIA is an architect based in Berkeley, CA. and Austria. In 1992, he moved to Austria where he was introduced to European energy efficiency and sustainable, timber based construction methods.  He returned to Berkeley in 2005 and introduced the Passive House Standard to California by retrofitting his home.  As a consultant to the Austrian Trade Commission, Mr. Tahan authored a study describing the opportunities for Austrian companies to introduce their products and systems to the US green building industry.  Mr. Tahan has now joined the CREE team, and is assisting this Austrian general contracting firm to adapt its timber based “system approach” method to designing and building office buildings, schools and residential projects in North America.
