Using Contracts to Leverage BIM

The full benefits of BIM are only unlocked when collaboration is maximized. This is not easy. Historic contract methodology leans toward every company for themselves and risk aversion. This discussion will look at reducing the total risk on a project by addressing it virtually, then sharing the risk to the projects' total benefit (Nash Equilibrium approach). The end result is less risk, that is better managed, and a happier client. It all comes down to getting a better contract in place when we start.

Full Benefits of BIM

Benjamin Crosby is the Director of BIM for W.G. Yates Construction. He was chosen for this position because of his expertise as both a builder and an educator. His passion for construction matches well with the enthusiasm he shows for education. He strives not only to acquire the best practices for himself but to share that information with project teams, coworkers, and colleagues, whenever the opportunity presents itself. Benjamin's recent building experience includes General Project Manager on a 1,700 bed design build prison and Project Manager/Scheduler on a bid build federal courthouse.

About the Speaker:

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • The Nash Equilibrium approach to a project (true BIM).
  • Why and how sharing models benefits the entire project (full BIM).
  • About contract tools that are readily available to manage BIM risk and how these tools increase collaboration (better BIM).
  • How to propose these contract changes to owners (BIM addendum).
